Mattsson is a name that has become synonymous with
melodic progressive metal fused with symphonic,
neo-classical and ethnic touches. This direction is
continued and taken to a higher level for 'Tango',
the fifth album to be released under the Mattsson banner.
Led by guitarist/composer
Lars Eric Mattsson, 'Tango' sees the collaboration
between Mattsson and vocalist Adrienn Antal who first paired
up on 2008’s 'Dreamchild' release build upon its
predecessors impressive foundations for this overall heavier
release. Yet 'Tango' is arguably more accessible for
the first time listener with tracks such as 'Believe',
'I’ll Find Another Way' and the title track
epitomising this commercial aspect. To add another
voice to the album Mattsson has called upon Status Minor
vocalist Markku Kuikka who darker style contrasts nicely
with Antal’s.
'Tango'
is 11 tracks clocking in at close to 73 minutes of some of
the heaviest riffs and most complex musical passages to date
from Lars, yet within the musical virtuosity there is a
common theme of melody with the albums lyrical inspiration
coming from everyday life and the state of the world.
The song 'The Grand
Escape' is e a mini rock-opera of sorts as it holds a
complete story with sections that could be split into
separate songs. Lars rates this track as "The best piece
of music I have recorded, and it’s certainly different from
anything I have ever done before in terms of structure”.
Mattsson also finds time for a little humour in the
likes of the title track which takes a metal take on the
'Tango' theme with the final product being an eminently
commercial and catchy tune with an almost Abba like feel,
whilst this humour again crops up on the smoky blues of
'Slave To The Road'.
The initial recording for
the album began in June 2009, although 'Slave To The
Road' originates from 2003 originally intended to be on
the Mattsson album 'Power Games'. Recording of the
album continued into January 2010 taking place in 3
different studios in Finland and Hungary before Mattsson set
about the final mix and mastering.

'No Surrender + Live’ is a
re-recorded version of one of Lars Eric Mattsson’s earliest
albums originally released in 1989 to celebrate 20 years
since its original release. This new version sees all vocals
and guitars being re-recorded with the addition of a few
live tracks tagged on the end for good measure.
‘No Surrender’ is classic
hard rock fused with neo-classical metal all with the unique
Lars Eric Mattsson flavour. Whilst the song writing might
not be as advanced as more recent efforts released under the
Mattsson name such as “Dreamchild” and “War”, this is a
slice of history which shows an artist that has continued to
grow over the 20 years since its initial release.
To go with the 15 studio
tracks there is the bonus of 5 live tracks discovered in the
Mattsson archives which features tracks from the albums
‘Electric Voodoo’ and ‘Eternity.’

“Dream Child” is a fine blend of interesting and deep
compositions within great songs. The album took 15 months to
complete with Mattsson taking great care to arrange and record
very precisely with many ideas being reworked during this
process to bring you the album you hear today.
The material on “Dream Child” is better structured and more
accessible than before and with the inclusion of strings and
woodwinds (courtesy of The Astral Orchestra) along with better
recording and mixing techniques all show how Mattsson applies
the musical influences he has gathered since day one making
Mattsson in 2008 a unique experience.
On
his new vocalist, Mattsson proudly states, “Adrienn Antal is
the best singer I have ever had the pleasure of working with.
She has a great voice, is very musical and we click together
extremely well. Adrienn Antal is the star of this album.
Without her the songs would not have come to life in the way
they have, and in my view the main quality boost comes from
Adrienn Antal”. Adding further depth to the vocal arrangements
are the inclusion of vocals from Björn Lodin (Baltimoore) who
will be a name familiar to fans of numerous albums from Lars
over the years.
“Dream Child” is a potent new album and sound for 2008.

"Earthbound" was Lars' first instrumental release in over 14
years. Earthbound found Mattsson in an eclectic mode with
open arrangements and playing right from the soul that
travels from the melodic to the progressive. On the album
Lars comments, "After finishing my progressive metal rock
opera "War" earlier this year I felt the need to do
something that was quite the opposite, so I took an almost
minimalist approach and as opposed to what you hear on
"War". My new solo album Earthbound is just me and a
drummer, as few instruments as possible, no vocals and very
little keyboards, so it really is a guitar album in every
aspect. It's not overblown when it comes to production and
recording with the aim to keep things simple while still
exploring new territory."

doubt) heaviest release to date.

"Eternity" was my first album, originally released in 1988 in
Europe and Japan. The recordings were of extremely low
quality due to lack of money and knowledge. Even though the
album was received well, I was always quite unhappy with the
sound and some performances on it. Since there have been
requests for a re-release of "Eternity", I decided the
material would need a serious upgrade. This is why this
version contains totally re-recorded versions of every song
on the original album. "Children Of The Sun" is a song that
should have been on the album originally but somehow didn't
make it - here it is at last. I hope that you like it."

Electric Voodoo, (also released in the United States as "The
Exciter") and known in some circles as Electric Woodoo",
blends hard rock and neo-classical metal in the European
tradition, as Finnish guitarist Lars Eric Mattsson plays
impossibly fluid lines over ten pumping, metallic rhythm
tracks. Drawing from influences such as Uli Jon Roth,
Michael Schenker and Paco De Lucia, Mattsson straddles the
line between finesse and fury, and between passion and
aggression. Electric Woodoo also finds Mattsson playing all
the instruments, augmenting his fretboard wizardry with
keyboards, electric percussion and bass. High energy
instrumental statements.

After a few years that I don't consider to be
the best part of my life I finally got that sparkle to try
to do the absolutely best music I can, or rather music I
would personally like to hear. I think I found myself in a
very creative mood and I was able to come up with 12 really
good songs that fuses a lot of influences from the 70-ies
and 80-ies but specially from the 70-ies. I think Obsession
is my first good album since this was the first time I
allowed myself to take the time I needed to complete
everything. Still today I think most of these songs are
really good.
